From Beauty World to Bugis, the walls of six Downtown Line MRT stations will exhibit photographs curated by the Singapore International Photography Festival in October.
These include Canadian photographer Scott A. Woodward’s chain on North Korea, to be shown at Newton station, and homegrown artist Marvin Tang’s nature show Stateland, which will hang at Botanic Gardens station.

A jury panel of curators shortlisted the works as part of the festival’s Open Call Showcase initiative. Some of them will also be exhibited at the Alliance Francaise de Singapour and National Library Building.

Supported by the Land Transport Authority and Moove Media, it is an effort by festival organisers to make images more accessible to the public, this year as the biennial event enters its fifth edition.

Speaking at a media seminar at the independent artwork space Deck on Wednesday afternoon, the festival’s artistic director Gwen Lee also unveiled the festival’s lineup, which runs from Aug 19 to mid-November.

These include solo exhibitions by three photographers that are reputed – Japan’s Daido Moriyama, the Li Zhensheng of China and the United States’ Roger Ballen – which are curated based on the festival’s theme this year, The Archive.

“Individuals have the perception that archives are about lost memories, but really, the action of archiving is constant and a daily activity. For example, when you take a photo and set it on Facebook, that photograph is part of an archive,” says Ms Lee.

Other activities include talks, professional workshops, portfolio reviews, pupil education programmes and guided tours.
